sad news concerns steve gilliard. . .

from the blog:

It is with tremendous sadness that we must convey the news that Steve Gilliard, editor and publisher of The News Blog (www.thenewsblog.net), passed away early Saturday morning, June 2nd. He was 41.

To those who have come
to trust The News Blog
and its insightful,
brash and unapologetic
editorial tone, we have
Steve to thank from the
bottom of our hearts. Steve
helped lead many discussions
that mattered to all of
[above photo by lindsay beyerstein] us, and he tackled subjects and interest categories where others feared to tread.

We will post more information as it becomes available to us.

Please keep Steve's friends and family in your thoughts and prayers.

Steve meant so much to us. We will miss him terribly.

". . .and so, eventually, all
things merge into one, and
a river runs through it. . .

the river was cut by the world's
great flood, and runs over rocks
from the basement of time. on the
rocks are timeless raindrops, and
under the rocks are the words. . ."

and, some of those words
were his -- to all of us. . .

[with sincere apologies to
norman maclean -- and his
angelic work, in green above. . .]

later -- as an update -- i've added a
youtube.com video of our little
neighborhood group, "doin' some
good in tha' [our] hood
. . ."

i do think steve would have
appreciated this. . . so, here's
to his life, and to him, then:

brief site update from Jen

Jen here. The last 24 hours have been disorienting and just plain horrible for me personally, but let me say THANK YOU for all of the condolences that have been pouring in from around the blogsphere. In the next few days, we will have for the NewsBlog community:

-- A "guest book" that will hold more comments than a standard thread
-- An official obituary, which his family is providing to me

For the time being, we have removed the PayPal link--until his folks are able to get into the account, we don't want to make things more complicated. At his family's discration, they may be sending me a PayPal link to a new family account.

The tentative plan is to have this site up for the next 30 days, and to then take it down. Other members of the community are in discussion RE setting up a spinoff site, but I will no longer be involved in any way with the Blog.

Gilly paid me a great compliment by putting me on the masthead. He did this as a way to encourage me to write, but in fact, he did all of the financial work and managerial work -- I never had access to the PayPal account, his hosting services, and so forth.

I will try to post more later today -- right now, just dealing with...everything. Very tired.

In the meantime, watch this space, and thank you all for all of your love and patience.

-- Jen

Read Gilliard's 2006 Duke lacrosse posts, trying to lynch those guys, and see how fast he dropped talking about the case when it turned out to be bogus. No apologies. He was a liar who couldn't stop eating.

that was small, and sad, joey.

no one (Gilly included) is
defined by only one post -- or
one position -- especially when
carnal death has forever ended
his ability to respond (here) to
your very small-minded, un-
charitable libel.

try to live well -- and try to see
with your "better eyes," next time
'round, okay, joey?

okay.
